A 13 year old child was beaten to death in Iraq by his father and step-mother. He was repeatedly beaten, locked up in near-freezing temperatures and denied food. He was killed because his step-mother believed he was gay. /1

In most parts of the world 'best interests of the child' are usually the guiding principle, in Islam a mother loses rights to her non-infant children after a divorce. /2

The issue at hand is a Hadith Biden quoted about standing up against evil, which on the face of it could be interpreted positively /1 The problem is the Hadith talks about taking direct action against something entirely nebulous. According to many fundamentalist Muslims that includes 'righting wrongs' that the state is unwilling or unable to do. It's the justification often used by terrorists for violence. /2
