Man...nothing like having your Sudanese mother check you on the #SudanUprising

So I was talking to my mom about whatโ€™s happening in Sudan and this image came up. To put it mildly, she was not impressed. Hereโ€™s why: The protests have been going on for the past 4 months, and during this time many have been either killed or jailed and tortured. Thing is, these protests have had women at the forefront leading them from the start.

This is a really good episode. One point that was mentioned in passing but is no less important is the idea of a pan-legalist Islam in which we determine how we act solely based on legal permissibility.
Islam is much bigger than a code of do and donโ€™t do. Itโ€™s a religion of nurturing excellent character development. Itโ€™s not enough to know the specifics of the law. Thereโ€™s a greater backdrop that must also be kept in mind.

While I appreciate and empathize with the perspective of the author, this piece ignores one important fact - that doctors are not mindless automatons with medical training there to act on the whims of patients.

The paternalistic doctor-patient relationship is mostly a thing of the past as medicine moves forward. But itโ€™s problematic to expect that doctors should simply do as you wish.

When you see a massive explosion of atheism among Muslims, it's because people like Abdul Rahman as-Sudais are imams in the Holy Sanctuary in Mecca.

In this week's Friday sermon as-Sudais peddles conspiracy theories and praises M.B.S., calling him a reformer inspired by God. One thing people like as-Sudais do is equivocate between the status of Mecca and Medina with the political entity called Saudi Arabia. In this misguided sermon, he makes any criticism of the Saudi government equivalent to an attack against the sanctity of Mecca and Medina.

Why al-Andalus Fell (Arabic)

Shaykh Saโ€™eed al-Kamali was asked here about the main cause for the fall for al-Andalus and expulsion of Muslims from it. He notes that itโ€™s quite incredible when you think about despite how Muslims were at the time in terms of intelligence and culture, i.e. civilization, they were overtaken by a people who were largely ignoramuses still living in the Dark Ages.
