12 years ago today: Igor Girkin said he had been tasked with destroying the Ukrainian state in eastern Ukraine, following the Crimea model. In April 2014, masked gunmen linked to the FSB, GRU and other Russian groups began appearing across the region. Ah yes, the famously “spontaneous local uprising”: calling a GRU operative for Igor Girkin’s building-seizure manual while Russian special forces with 15 years of combat experience were already on the ground.
