“Greater Syria” (or “Bilad al-Sham”) historically referred to a large Arab state stretching from modern-day Syria through Lebanon, Jordan, Israel, and sometimes parts of Iraq and Saudi Arabia, and even southern Turkey, with Damascus as the center.

Pan-Arab nationalists dreamed of uniting all Arabs under one banner, erasing colonial borders drawn after World War I. Israel was never seen as a separate nation in this vision, but rather it was just the southern province of Greater Syria.

On November 29, 1947, the United Nations General Assembly voted to partition Palestine into a Jewish state and an Arab state.

The Jewish leadership accepted this plan as a painful but necessary compromise after two thousand years of exile and the recent horrors of the Holocaust.

Jewish families had begun settling in Polish lands during the 1100s. In western Europe, crusades, local violence, and new laws were making life harder for Jews. Polish rulers from the Piast family saw a chance to strengthen their growing territories.

Their lands needed people who could trade goods, manage money, and help build towns.
