Spring emergence of Front Range snakes is upon us. Beginning early-mid April & lasting through May, prairie rattlesnakes leave their winter hibernacula & migrate to their foraging grounds. In this thread, I'll give you some biology facts & safety tips (1 of 7) #Jeffcotrails During spring emergence, prairie rattlesnakes are primarily diurnal (daytime active) & more likely to be encountered by people. On cool, sunny days expect to find snakes flattened against trail surfaces, attempting to soak up some warmth to assist them with their journey (2 of 7)

Story time: during yesterday's herping adventure Priya only requested we find 2 things: rattlesnakes and toads - Not only was her request granted, but we had no idea how awesomely it would play out... (thread) We checked a Black-tailed Prairie Dog burrow that I suspected served as a rookery for the resident female Prairie Rattlesnake. We peered down & found she was still hanging out, but no babies yet. We left her undisturbed and searched for Woodhouse's Toads at a nearby reservoir.
