During spring emergence, prairie rattlesnakes are primarily diurnal (daytime active) & more likely to be encountered by people. On cool, sunny days expect to find snakes flattened against trail surfaces, attempting to soak up some warmth to assist them with their journey (2 of 7)

We checked a Black-tailed Prairie Dog burrow that I suspected served as a rookery for the resident female Prairie Rattlesnake. We peered down & found she was still hanging out, but no babies yet. We left her undisturbed and searched for Woodhouse's Toads at a nearby reservoir.
