So since I have contributed to the landscape of too-long video essays, I might as well contribute to the discourse also. Which is to say that video essays are inherently a cross-medium format and so can't really be judged by a single standard alone.
If a video essay is less than five hours, by word count, it is on the short side for written, published nonfiction. My Resident Evil video is a little over a 100k words, which means that it's like a 280 page book with double spacing and larger font. Which is not huge!

The new video is doing numbers like I've never had on my channel before, like double the previous peak for the first couple days. So that's worth celebrating! Unfortunately, it's also been extremely divisive in unexpected ways I feel like I ought to address.
Rather than being flooded with 'git gud' flack, it's a flood of people telling me I've fundamentally misunderstood the phrase. More than that, I'm apparently coming across as bitter, vitriolic, insecure, and hostile. That certainly wasn't my intention.

Did you know that I'm a "low skilled worker"? I dropped out of high school, I was too drunk and depressed in my early 20s to actually get through more than a semester of college without missing too many classes. So all I had was my job. And all the jobs I had were bad.
I was told, by Blockbuster Video, that I was not qualified to work a cash register because my first job was at Pizza Hut and my skillset, therefore, is food service. So I took a job at Panera bread where, after 3 years of full time employment, they gave me a 17 cent raise. CENTS.
