Israel is refusing 2 leave south Lebanon by this Sunday as req under its “ceasefire” agreement w/Lebanon. This is yet another blatant Israeli breach of the agreement. The @nytimes makes it look like Israel is the innocent party. Here’s why that’s wrong /1 nytimes.com/2025/01/24/wor… The biggest falsehood in this story is this 👇🏽. There havent been “occasional violations.” There have been SYSTEMATIC violations committed primarily by Israel since the deal started on Nov 27 Image

Trump has issued an Executive Order that revives his Muslim Ban but is also much much worse. Here’s a thread on key aspects of the new ban /1 whitehouse.gov/presidential-a… The admin has clearly learned from its earlier efforts 2 ban natls from Muslim maj countries by issuing a “facially neutral” order that appears 2 create a non-arbitrary process 4 its various action items. This is procedural process washing of what it still a discriminatory ban /2

1/ This is an extraordinary if obvious admission. It is obvious the reason Mangione is being charged with terrorism isnt because his alleged actions fit any plausible US legal definition of “terrorism.” It’s because of the outpouring of support for him across US society. 2/ It is because of how his purported anger/actions resonates with countless folks whose bodies are treated in cost-benefit terms rather than as precious living beings whose health and well-being are prioritized

1/ Having listened 2 this entire interview, I can say Rashid Khalid's comments abt Iran & the "Axis of Resistance" r inconsistent, imprecise & simplistic. Does Iran seek 2 promote its self-interest? Yes. Does that mean the Axis is pure real politik? No. 2/First, u could argue that the format here - a podcast interview - makes it unfair to hold Khalidi to a standard of precision or accuracy for an off-the-cuff cmt. His statements r pretty forceful tho & stated with a great confidence, so I think it's fair to hold him to them

The House is set 2 vote on a bill that would allow the Trump admin 2 designate US non-profits, like universities, as "terrorist support orgs" if they, say, support pro-Palestine students protesting genocide. This bill is terrifying & must be stopped /n. /1theintercept.com/2024/11/10/tru… The current bill incorporates another billl, HR 6408, which passed the House earlier this year but stalled in the Senate. That bill was exclusively aimed at stripping 501(c)(3) of their non-profit status for being "terrorist supporting orgs" /n

Netanyahu’s speech is not just replete with lie after lie after lie, Netanyahu is displaying visual evidence of how Israel seeks to re-make the entire Middle East. There are 2 parts: 1. Aggressive war & 2. Economic hegemony /n Image Aggressive/genocidal war: Netanyahu’s map is a map clearly showing Israel’s plan to destroy multiple nations - from Palestine to Lebanon to Syria to Iran. This is a plan for Israeli supremacy across the region Image

Israel rejects any liability under the Genocide Convention saying that its desire is to destroy Hamas NOT the Palestinian people. For several reasons, I think that desire can actually be used to est genocidal intent against the Palestinians. Here’s why /n opiniojuris.org/2024/08/02/the… Admittedly, the Genocide Convention does not protect political and military groups from annihilation. But that doesn’t mean that the annihilation of a political/military group cannot be relevant to est intent to destroy a national, ethical, racial or religious group as such

As always, Heidi is right. Israel doesn't have any kind of right to respond to the strike against the Golan Heights, even if Hezbollah IS responsible. A bit more detail as to why coming at you now /n One basis for responding is the right to self-defense under Art 51 (or a Sec Council res which isn’t going to happen). Israel has no Art 51 right since the Golan Heights is sovereign Syrian territory, NOT Israeli territory, as establish by intl law

Just published this piece on-going legislative efforts in Congress to “securitize” US universities by treating pro-Palestine students & faculty as threats to US national security that must be disciplined & controlled. These proposals should scare us all n/ lpeproject.org/blog/universit… The most terrifying legislation amends the tax law to strip universities of their charitable status where they “support terrorists.” Both “support” & “terrorist” are defined SO broadly as to prohibit universities from allowing SJPs to operate on their campuses. I’m very skeptical of the US-Israel ceasefire proposal. Its riddled w/way 4 Israel 2 continue its military activities in Gaza. The most important phase - phase 2 - may never be reached. Phase 1 doesnt require a fully Israeli withdrawal from Gaza either /n aljazeera.com/amp/news/2024/… Phase 1 has serious problems. It only requires Israel to withdraw from “populated areas” of Gaza. With most of Gaza depopulated by Israel, what does “populated” even mean? At the very least, this is not a total withdrawal, which will only happen in phase 2

Some thoughts on the Biden executive order sanctioning 4 Israeli settlers. First, the EO is written broadly. It mentions “extremist settler violence” in the preamble but the EO is not limited to Israeli settlers. /1 whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/… The actions that are subject to sanctions, as reflected in Section 1, do not reference Israeli settlers. While they only apply to actions taken by “foreign persons,” there is nothing that would prevent the US from using this EO against Palestinians. /2
