I laud every effort to wrest control of this horrific malware posing as an app from 🇨🇳's control and as its US users' privacy can't be protected retroactively, the sale might be a decent compromise since it protects their data going forward at least.

BUT, users should note..🧵 2/ Now is the time for TT users to take proactive steps to ensure their past data shared with Beijing is protected as best they can themselves and that QUITE POSSIBLY it would be best to make a backup on their own data now and delete most if not all of their past shared content.

Digital opium metaphor isn't unjustified - a problem I have with this view is the idea that the CCP which runs Tiktok & ByteDance (and Douyin) uses TT merely as some "digital opium" ie make it addictive & nothing else. No. That's only "retention & growth" part of their strat:
1/ 2/ TT isn't merely an addictive craze like say some popular online videogames tend to be (or indeed Tencent's LoL is) and to frame it this way doesn't at all alert its users and potential users to the dangers. Nope, Tiktok is malware.

Disagree; there are good indications Tiktok US penetration has peaked and has likely started to decline. Keep in mind ByteDance's self-reported numbers are entirely fake and inflated >10x and they had their app aggressively ping Cloudflare to fake activity & fool investors: Image 2/ If there was any good content on Tiktok, it'd be reposted. I haven't seen good content since the banned hero who explained Uyghur genocide while pretending to do a make-up tutorial.

I doubt Tiktok US has more than 1 million users, maybe 5m outside US.
