2024 Severe Weather Year-In-Review
Check out the 2024 Year-In-Review! We will take the next several tweets to point out some of the most notable events from the year.
Most notably, 2024 preliminarily had the 2nd most confirmed tornadoes on record (1950-present) with 1,796 tornadoes. The previous record was 1,817 tornadoes in 2004. This was largely driven by a near record April & May tornado count.

There were 3098 severe weather reports in August 2024. This is slightly above the 10-year rolling average of 2674.
There were 62 confirmed tornadoes which is slightly below normal.

Overall, severe weather was near the long term average for overall number of severe weather reports.
However, there were at least 180 confirmed tornadoes which is the most since 1997. The majority of these tornadoes were associated with Hurricane Beryl, and the Chicago area derecho.

Storms moving offshore this morning brought the end to a very active 16 days (Apr 25-May 10) of severe weather in continental US.
The @NWSSPC issued 99 Watches and 237 Mesoscale Discussions during this period, with 3280+ Warnings issued from local @NWS forecast offices.
There were 2522 filtered preliminary severe weather reports covering 40 states across the CONUS during this 16 day period.

April Severe Weather Month-In-Review:
Preliminarily, April 2024 saw the 2nd most tornadoes on record (300).
Despite it being a prolific month for tornadoes, the overall number of severe weather reports was only slightly above the 10 year average.

Fifty years ago today, The Super Outbreak of tornadoes of 3-4 April 1974 occurred over the central/eastern US and it remains the most significant severe weather episode on record in the US. This thread will look at forecasts from that day and how severe forecasting has evolved.
On 3 Apr 1974, a “Scattered Severe Thunderstorm Risk” was forecast, which is equivalent to a “High Risk” today. Until 1986, forecasts were not issued beyond the first 24 hours. Today, advancements in severe forecasting/science allow for skillful forecasts up to 8 days in advance.

December Month-In-Review
Dec was a historical month with a record number of severe weather reports, 9th longest tornado track on record, record number of tornadoes, first Dec tornado in MN history, the most mesoscale discussions issued in a day. Below is a not so brief summary.
December 2021 had the most preliminary severe weather reports (1261) since the preliminary report database began in 2000. This is more than double the previous record of 645 from 2002.

After several days of extremely critical fire weather areas in California, we decided to look deeper into the statistics to see how rare this frequency of extremely critical fire weather areas is. We will go through the numbers in the next several tweets. 1/x
Since 2001, there have been 5 instances w/ 3 or more consecutive days of extremely critical fire weather. The longest streak was 4 days (Dec 4-7, 2017) but there were 5 of 6 days (Nov 8-13, 2018). Extreme areas are expected thru Wed which would be 4 consecutive & 6 of 7 days.
