🌬️ We've received many inquiries regarding the persistently windy conditions we had this past cool season. How did it compare to previous years? Several stats from Philadelphia are listed in the first graphic, & the second graphic shows the average wind speed per month. 🧵 (1/5) Wind statistics from the 2024-2025 cool season at Philadelphia.
Average wind speed and direction by month for Philadelphia since 1940. November through April are historically the windiest 6 months of the year on average, w/ March being the single windiest month. This past season was the windiest since the 2014-2015 season based on average daily mean wind speed. Winter was also the coldest since 2014-2015. (2/5)

🌬️🍃 It has been a windy season so far, but how does it stack up against average winds? We broke it down into a few different statistics to look at below, including avg wind speed, and number of days with an avg wind speed 15 mph or greater and max wind gusts 30 mph or greater. Average wind statistics and records for Philadelphia. November through April are historically the windiest 6 months of the year. So far this season (November 1 through March 21), the average (mean) wind speed for the period is exactly in line with the average for the 1991-2020 period at 10.1 mph. Monthly average wind speed for Philadelphia.

🤓 How about some good old fashioned science from the midnight shift? If you're around the Philly metro or adjacent areas of S NJ or SE PA, you may have noticed the shallow snowpack beginning to slowly fade away despite temps being too cold for any melting. Why is this? (1/5) Change of phase diagram for water, including terms to describe the changes between different phases. This is due to a lesser known change of phase called sublimation, when ice (or any solid substance) changes directly into water vapor (or the gaseous phase).
