I’m not chasidic. But my friends are. You can’t understand what shutting down synagogues in middle of a Jewish holiday means. Maybe you are not as religious. Fair. Literally, the only reason these folks came to America was to practice their religion in peace. 1/ It’s easy to vilify a group you don’t understand. So just a few facts: when NYC finally came to Boro Park last week, the community really tried to accommodate them. However, by singling out Chasidim they feel attacked when they are one of 20 (!) communities with spikes in NYC. 2/

Thread that will likely annoy everyone. What happened yesterday in Williamsburg is a case study: ‘whatever can go wrong, will go wrong’ - pandemic version. Let me count the ways. 1. The Chasidic synagogue wanted to honor their saintly rabbi so they came up with a misguided scheme for an outdoor ‘socially distant’ public funeral. They were so convinced they could pull this off they COORDINATED with NYPD and even handed out masks.
