STATEMENT FROM BRIGHTON & SUSSEX NA’AMOD

We are Jews living in the Brighton area, who are members of Na’amod campaigning in support of Palestinian rights and against Israel’s occupation, apartheid and horrific assault on Gaza. We know that racisms are integrally connected and are alarmed by the rise in antisemitism and Islamophobia since October 7th.

HAPPENING NOW: Hundreds gathering in Victoria Embankment Park for our ceasefire rally. In solidarity with all Palestinians and Israelis affected by devastating violence, we are coming together to demand an immediate ceasefire, hostage exchange, and an end to the siege of Gaza. Image In the face of alarming rises in both antisemitism and Islamophobia, this rally is a crucial moment for us to unite against those who seek to sow division among minority communities here in the UK. We adopt the definition of Islamophobia as endorsed by the @MuslimCouncil and @SayeedaWarsi, amongst others.

That is: Islamophobia is rooted in racism and is a type of racism that targets expressions of Muslimness or perceived Muslimness. 1/11 This might look like: causing, calling for, aiding or justifying acts of aggression against Muslims; dehumanising, demonising or making stereotypical allegations about Muslims, and prescribing to/ propagating conspiracy theories about Muslims. 2/11

Rising antisemitism since 10/7 is very real and alarming. We want to be clear: holding Jews around the world responsible for Israel’s actions is antisemitic and should be condemned outright. All people deserve to feel safe wherever they live. 1/7 When combined with a history of oppression, growing antisemitism can understandably cause anxiety about Jewish safety and future in the Diaspora. It's also never been clearer that Israel's actions do not guarantee Jewish safety; we must rely on each other for that. 2/7

BREAKING: The “BDS bill” just had its first reading in UK Parliament. The bill would ban public bodies from making ethical investment decisions, and explicitly excludes Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories from any possible exemptions. 🧵 publications.parliament.uk/pa/bills/cbill… Na’amod has been campaigning against this bill since it was first mentioned in last year’s Queen’s Speech. The reason why is simple: it is bad for Jews, bad for Palestinians, and bad for democracy.

HAPPENING NOW: Dozens of British Jews just ripped a red carpet outside the UK Foreign Office in advance of Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu’s arrival tomorrow. Our message to our government and communal leaders is clear: No red carpet for occupation and apartheid! We think representatives of a government entrenching an immoral and violent military occupation over the Palestinian people should have no place in our country, and no place in our Jewish communities. So we’re demanding: Don’t meet with Netanyahu! Image

Today's 'Solidarity with Israel' rally in London has exposed the moral crisis within our communal leadership.

A thread 🧵 We mourn the loss of life in Israel and feared for Israelis in bomb shelters. This does not prevent us from also mourning Palestinians and recognising that the root of the violence is the occupation, which has been maintained by every Israeli government for the past 54 years.

Today, on Jerusalem Day, we wake up to disturbing scenes of tear gas and stun grenades being fired into al-Aqsa mosque again by Israeli police. Why is this happening? To clear Palestinians out of the Old City so that the far right “March of Flags” can take place this afternoon. This is the logic of occupation on full display: today is about celebrating Jewish domination of the city. There’s no room for Palestinians in that vision, so the Israeli police are violently removing them from the Old City to make way for a racist march.

We emerge from Shabbat horrified and heartbroken by the scenes in Jerusalem.

We call on our communal leaders @BoardofDeputies @BoDPres to condemn the hateful “March of The Flags” this Monday and to speak out against the forced displacement in Sheikh Jarrah.

Our statement below. ImageImage The violation of the sanctity and autonomy of Al-Aqsa with stun grenades and rubber bullets, including those directed at medics and journalists, is a stark illustration of the reality of occupation. /1

Last week @TzipiHotovely repeatedly refused on @BBCNewsnight to set out her vision for "peace" in Israel-Palestine.

So we translated a plan she wrote in 2013 for one, unequal, state.

It's a Jewish supremacist vision enshrining her racist worldview.

link.medium.com/3orJ7CnbKfb Hotovely proposes a "gradual imposition of sovereignty".

Step 1: more Jews. Launch a project to bring two million more Jews to Israel-Palestine. This aims to ensure a Jewish majority between the river and the sea.

We stand with those Palestinians who endured violent Jewish supremacist protests last night in Jerusalem.

This pogrom was led by Benzi Gopstein, head of far-right group Lehava, who @TzipiHotovely once warmly invited into the Knesset. This is not an isolated incident carried out by a group of fringe extremists. The racist ideology of Jewish supremacy is inherent in Israel's cruel and oppressive occupation. It has been normalised in Israel, and ignored by our community.

FAO the @BoardofDeputies and anyone else who thinks Israel is not excluding Palestinians from its vaccination programme: "15 Israeli, Palestinian and international health and human rights organizations: Israel must provide necessary vaccines to Palestinian health care systems."

One year ago, three Na'amodniks dressed as elephants disrupted a pro-occupation education event in London.

It was the launch of our first campaign (The 🐘 in the Room) and we could never have predicted how much we have grown and achieved since then.

A thread 👇 We launched our campaign, and our movement, because we could no longer keep schtum as our communal institutions actively and tacitly supported the occupation.

So we took a stand - at StandWithUs, the Board of Deputies, the Zionist Federation, Regavim and more.

Tonight we are blockading the entrance to an event by far-right Israeli settler group Regavim, hosted by UK Lawyers for Israel. The hate and destruction promoted by Regavim should have no place in our community. For @UKLFI to host an organisation which works to displace Palestinians by demolishing their homes is a blight on our community’s morals. Racism and hatred must be fought everywhere.

Tonight Na’amodniks disrupted the Zionist Federation’s annual Balfour Lecture. @ZionistFed dedicates itself to defending, denying & distracting from the 🐘 in the Room. So we came to tell them: the occupation is a moral crisis, and we won’t let you ignore it. @ZionistFed The @ZionistFed claims to promote “the real face of Israel”. To them, this face doesn’t doesn’t feature the millions of Palestinians living under military occupation—except, that is, when they can be cast as terrorists. 2/8
