एक बार भगवान शिव कैलाश पर्वत पर वेदों का रहस्य पार्वती को समझाने लगे।

पार्वती बड़े ध्यान से सुन रही थीं, किंतु बीच-बीच में वे ऊंघने भी लगती थीं।

जब बहुत प्रयत्न करने पर भी पार्वती अपने मन को एकाग्र न रख सकीं तो शिव क्रोध में

आकर बोले – “पार्वती! यह क्या हो रहा है? मैं तुम्हें इतना गूढ़ रहस्य समझा रहा हूं और तुम हो कि झपकियां ले रही हो।
.
तुममें तो इतनी ही बुद्धि है जितनी किसी मछुए की स्त्री में| जाओ,मृत्युलोक में किसी मछुए की स्त्री के रूप में जन्म लो।”
