For the 250th anniversary of our War of Independence, I’m writing a summary for my kids of my g-g-g-g-g-g-g-g-grandfather’s experiences in the immediate aftermath of the Battle of Lexington & Concord, which I’ll be sharing here for those of you who might also be interested. /1 In 1775, my 8x-g-grandfather Elisha Nye was the innkeeper at Tarpaulin Cove on Naushon Island, of the Elizabeth Islands, NW of Martha’s Vineyard, on Buzzard’s Bay, and SE of what later became New Bedford. His clientele were mostly whalers, fishermen, and smugglers. /2 Image

Several people here have reached out to me regarding their nervousness during canvassing in talking to GOP voters who may be “pro life.” Here’s how I do it, in case this will help you.

First, I tell them I have a daughter. If you don’t, mention nieces, goddaughters, etc. /1 This allows you to connect as a fellow human being, not as a partisan.

I tell them that ensuring abortion rights continue doesn’t force anyone who opposes abortion to themselves have an abortion, and I emphasize that I respect that choice as a personal matter (which I do). /2

🧵tweeted on behalf of Prof. Peter Arenella @arenella1:

“The Myth of Objectivity/Why our media hides behind it".

"Apart from simple math equations where there are objectively correct answers, even a great deal of scientific thinking is not purely objective because…/1 …the scientist relies on existing paradigms to look at the evidence. Thomas Kuhn established that idea many years ago.

However, the social "sciences" label is a misnomer because there are no empirically verifiable ways of legitimating most of its conclusions. /2

Senator Whitehouse has been on a recent TV tour proposing the adoption by Congress of a judicial Code of Conduct applicable to SCOTUS. As much as I respect him, and as sympathetic as I am to his rationale, this would be unconstitutional, IMO. /1 Article III of the Constitution establishes “the judicial Power of the United States…vested in one supreme Court, and in such inferior Courts as the Congress may from time to time ordain and establish.” /2 law.justia.com/constitution/u…

Yesterday I talked to a male lawyer who told me about a conference call he had during which another male lawyer repeatedly interrupted a female lawyer.

“She really held her own, though!” he reported. “What did you do?” I asked. /1 He replied that after the conference call ended he called her and congratulated her for not giving in, for continuing to try to complete her comments. He told her she did a great job. It was clear he was being self-congratulatory, that he considered himself a fine ally to her. /2

When TFG is a malignant narc: “Plaintiff does not acknowledge the deference owed to the incumbent President’s judgment. His position that he may override the express will of the executive branch appears to be premised on the notion that his executive power ‘exists in perpetuity.” As a malignant narcissist, this is really going to sting Trump:

“But Presidents are not kings, and Plaintiff is not President. He retains the right to assert that his records are privileged, but the incumbent President ‘is not constitutionally obliged to honor’ that assertion.”
