A quick thread for those who are now paying attention to #Taiwan because of the upcoming election. Here are some things you should read/listen to for a perspective that goes beyond the flood of election-related coverage. A few of my favorite long-form, English-language sources: has some great posts about Taiwan politics, including deep dives into the backgrounds of the three vice presidential candidates.wordsfromtaiwan.medium.com

I really wish that we could have conversations about widespread feelings of anger and grief in China without always framing them in these breathless "...and does this spell the end of the CCP?"-type terms. Bad when media do it, IMO worse when influential China watchers do it. 1/n Some version gets trotted out every time people in China are angry, always without evidence. (No, the start of the pandemic was not "China's Chernobyl moment," and the approximately gazillion sources that used this phrase should have known that it probably wouldn't be.).2/n

Journalists, a quick reminder that @womenalsoknow about politics and public health in China. Quick scan of @nytimes and other high-profile articles on #coronavirus suggests large majority of expert quotes are coming from male scholars. Here are some other folks to consult (1/n): Anthropologist Katherine Mason (Brown University), is the author of Infectious Change: Reinventing Chinese Public Health after an Epidemic about changes to China's public health system in the wake of SARS. brown.edu/academics/popu… (2/n)
