So, actually, let's rewind.

Li Ka-Shing, the OG HK Tycoon took out full page ads in all the major papers back in Aug 2019. They seem kind of innocuous, calling for and end to violence etc etc.
Image But! For the eagle-eyed, there was a message that was hidden in the add. On the 'no to violence ad', the cryptic words say - 因果由國 容港治己. *Very* loosely translated - 'This is the result of what the state has done. Let HK rule herself.' Image

So, tankies, wumaos and little pinks still seem to be in disarray on how they should spin the latest spate of protests, probably reflecting the lack of official narrative right now.

Will collect a sample of what the ghouls are saying on here. Let's see how it evolves. "The people are protesting against lockdowns! That means there's no genocide!"

12/10 to Carlos on the mental gymnastics there. No one ask Carlos why he commends the people for having 'courage'. No one asks Ma why he hashtagged all *those* words. Screenshot of two tweets. The top is from noted tankie Calor

It's 2022, the government have cordoned of Victoria Park, candles seem to be forbidden, and the police are chasing after anyone who just want to remember.

But our artists continue to draw. Thread of June 4th art this year.

Apparently the only thing that happened on June 4th 1989 in Tiananmen was a bunch of PLA soldiers sacrificing their lives.🥲 I originally thought they were being subversive, but it turned out they are just daft.

As a HKer, I'm *just* learning that China's never been colonized or subjugated by Europeans. Image "ancient civilization" and "indigenous people" are killing me

I'm glad Chinese officials are loving this chart from the 'Democracy Perception Index' conducted by the Alliance of Democracies and Latana - not Harvard - which also considers Taiwan and Hong Kong as countries 😊 Image Taiwanese know what's up Image

We are close to that time of the year again. Thread below from last year collects some of the 2019 HK protest art remembering June 4th: This year, some of the art memorializing June 4th are no longer there.

Thread below on HKer's art marking the removal from HKU of Danish artist Jens Galschiøt's Pillar of Shame, which was dismantled in the stealth of night by the govt:

I feel like this has been going on for a while. There’s a perception that the quality of new recruits after Umbrella in 2014 dropped off a cliff because no self-respecting HKer would want to be a cop unless they couldn’t do anything else, or they're just cop at heart. This might or might not have been a reason for why the police in 2019 were just a lot more ruthless and undisciplined versus 2014, although I don't entirely buy it - cops will cop.

One wonders why they went with what the expats are singing instead of what the local Shanghainese were crying out during the lockdown. Do you hear the people sing?

Apparently, Qiao thinks the Chinese diaspora is what it is today because of *checks notes* the Boxer Rebellion. Ah yes, my grandparents fled China because of the sacking of the Summer Palace. In 1860.

This is not that different from Russia-apologists going "NATO made them do it" Image Yes, the nine-dash line makes an appearance, of course.
