I’m not sure if folks are gonna understand what I’m trying to say but I’m gonna try: Too often I hear white liberals talking about how the US is gonna crumble under the weight of the current right-wing nationalism stuff. It tends to have some sort of fatalistic bent to it.
I get it. There’s a lot about this country, it’s history, and our current trajectory that’s troublesome and potentially catastrophic. But there’s some sort of white guilt mixed in there that seems to believe we’re doomed cuz we deserve to be doomed. I get it.

Oregon is living up to its reputation, I guess. We got turned away from three different restaurants tonight. None of these actually seemed like a race thing, but also I’ve never in my life experienced this sort of thing. 🤨
First place was an upscale steak place. Saw they had reservations on Open Table for 845 and 900 but didn’t make one. Walked in at 8:40 (they close at 9) and they said “We’re not taking walk-ins any more tonight.” Could have just made a reservation right then but left instead.

Korean interviewer: “…and they kept asking that question, ugh.”
Youn Yuh-Jung: “They kept asking ‘What was it like seeing Brad Pitt?’” [sips wine]
Just trying to add a little more nuance to the translation here. Folks are missing the interviewer ending with “아유,” a classic Korean expression of empathetic exasperation. 🙃
