I see Advice For Writer stuff circulating & I am not much for advice-giving , but will say a small thing that I encourage folks to consider has nothing to do with the writing really & it's being kind to the folks who work alongside you in every phase of the book-making process be kind to your editors, the people who set up interviews, the person who sets the type, who helps make the cover, the assistants of those people, and so on. Send thank you notes. I send little gifts the week after publication date.

not even as a "no thoughts, head empty" thing, but my commitment to minding my own business sharply clarifies what I consider my business and what I absolutely do not, and so it realigns my focus, my depth of care for the things I DO care about, my actual & literal energy, etc

the Sharpton clip I've seen bouncing around is upsetting, but not surprising. one of the last of a handful of times I got arrested it was for stealing deodorant, toothpaste and a toothbrush. I was living out of a storage unit, and had finally gotten a job interview after months. I got caught (as I often did, because I was bad at stealing things) & because I was on probation I had to do actual time (not much -- sentenced 10 days, did 6) even after the circumstances that led me to that action were laid out. Items totaled $7, tops.

late to this specific discourse but when I was young & at some punk show that was happening at the same time as an ICP show in the area, some racist punks tried to run down on me & a pal after the show & a group of juggalos had our back & that was pretty cool & much appreciated ICP would play columbus a lot back when I served at a diner near the music venues & I got to know some folks who would come down with some regularity. Was invited to shows but never went -- mostly because I was poor & had to budget my show money tightly.

I mean the last time they were on TNT, the dudes didn't seem to know Anthony Edwards name & also were like "wait...why does Karl Anthony Towns shoot 3s??? when he's big????"

many have already pointed out the most obvious issue(s) with this but also -- my DMs have always been closed & at this point, I check them maybe once a month, if that. Feels like this would maybe lead more folks to simply close/avoid/ignore DMs altogether.

Beyond that though -- performing and enacting cruelty is one of the currencies this site is fueled by. And so any decision to open up the potential for greater access to that feels, to me, like it is done with clear intentions.

Got this extremely infuriating letter from the Ohio Department of Education yesterday. I haven’t been public about the saga that lead to this letter, because I don’t generally handle these type of things publicly. But this has me fed up and angry. So here's a thread: In 2020, I was asked to coach a high school soccer team. The season was approaching, and the team’s original coach had an unexpected tragedy, leaving the team suddenly without a coach. I jumped in to help, and began the process of filing paperwork, etc.
