Govind Swarup passed away today at 91. He started radio astronomy in India in 60s, build two radio telescopes that were best in the world, created a radio astro community in India. A thread of texts to read about this rare scientist, engineer, educationist @NCRA_Outreach @asipoec After Bhabha got him back to India in 1963 to TIFR, he built the Ooty Radio Telescope, worlds largest at that time, still standing majestically in the Nilgiri hills. Here he gathered around him a set of bright young minds who would go on 2 become NCRA-TIFR en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ooty_Radi…

“As much belief as there is evidence for”, said Narendra Dabholkar, a social activist and rationalist, assassinated on this day 7 years ago. @gsaipsn has marked 20 Aug as ‘National Scientific Temper Day’ in his memory #NSTD #NationalScientificTemperDay #Dabholkar #AskWhy Dabholkar led the Maharashtra Andhashraddha Nirmoolan Samiti till his murder in 2013 and campaigned against miracle cures, unquestioning belief, caste oppression and irrationality.

He saw scientific temper and rationality as tools in the struggle for social justice.

Mercury will pass between Earth & Sun on afternoon, 11 Nov 2019 Monday. Most of #MercuryTransit2019 can be seen from all of Africa, till local sunset. @SKA_Africa @SAAOOutreach @AfricaAstronomy @Astro4Dev & others are coordinating a Africa-wide campaign for #ToM2019 #ToMAfrica It is VERY dangerous to look at the Sun directly using telescope binoculars or naked eyes. Looking at Sun's image projected onto a sheet of paper by a telescope is safe. There r a few public events by science centres etc in Africa where u can see #ToM2019 safely (pic @samyukta_m)
