It’s 2019 and I still come across this version of the Shadow Speaker (Disney/Hyperion) with the whitewashed cover. Someone had this for me to sign at Comic-Con. Inside, I wrote something like “This cover was whitewashed”. 😆 In many ways, this version is a relic. I have a copy of Octavia Butler's Dawn with the whitewashed cover. It's a reminder.

A black Batman? Ugh, can we JUST CREATE NEW CHARACTERS WHO ARE BLACK? Is it THAT HARD?

Blackwashing only means the foundation will ALWAYS be white. It’s NOT the answer. It’s not even AN answer. Mscheeeeeeew. I don’t want a Black Santa, or a black Roland or a black James Bond, either! Create new dynamic Black characters who don’t have to ride the coattails of previous white versions of those characters!

This is fantastic! 😃

Also, whoever made this commercial has definitely seen the movie Life of Pi and I am delighted. If you can’t understand why this was banned, you’re not paying attention. 😒 Come on.

I just learned that writer Emeka Walter Dinjos passed on December 12th from diabetes complications. He was the 1st Nigerian winner of the Writers of the Future Contest and he was only 34 years old. I'm heartbroken and stunned. 😢🇳🇬🖋️ Here's a tribute written by Martin L. Shoemaker. writersofthefuture.com/view-from-a-hi…

Back when Who Fears Death came out, African scholars criticized me for portraying female general mutilation in a room with lights and technology. Just read an article complaining about my unique portrayal of Himba people in Binti.

Both of these books are set in the FAR FUTURE. Yes, Africa has futures and yes I’m free to explore them.
