Last night's launch in Toronto was amazing. Despite the like 6 other events happening, all the books sold out, the room was full and I had a lot of fun talking about staples theory. Here's a thread about what the launches have taught me ... 1. There is a huge appetite for someone to make sense of the moment that doesn't buy into a right or far-right frame. People are hungry for it.

International journalism in Canada right now is so bad. And I don't mean bad in the serving the empire way bad, but just bad bad.

Take this: CBC's one article focusing on the federal response to Lebanon. Thread.

cbc.ca/news/politics/… The article explains this for Canadians who are worried about loved ones:

"Appearing on CBC's Power & Politics Friday night, Joly told host David Cochrane the best way to leave Lebanon is through the Beirut airport."

Let's look at a live map ... Image

When people lament how disorganized the left is in this country, do they understand the role that rightwing forces have played to make it nearly impossible to do broad-based organizing in this country?

Let's start with the concrete wall within mainstream media You simply cannot get access to a mainstream media platform and discuss real leftwing politics. You can talk a little bit, sometimes, based on various issues, in the most narrow fashion, but mostly it's a total shut out.

How do we bring these politics to a mass audience?

The Liberals, the mayor of Ottawa, the local children's hospital and the public school board are all refusing to participate in Capital Pride this weekend because of a statement of solidarity for Palestine. Let's look at the statement and see what they're opposed to ... 1. The statement starts by condemening antisemitism and Islamophobia, in that order. "As a community facing rising levels of hate-motivated crimes, we know all too well how hate erodes our security. In this climate, we reaffirm that intolerance has no place in our events."

Yesterday, the National Post published an article illustrated by this image from @UJAFederation. Problem is, the intersection this is supposed to be at -- Prince Charles and (I am guessing) Bathurst, doesn't look like this. A thread. Image First off -- I don't actually think it matters that 50,000 or 30,000 or 10,000 people came out to this march. It's an annual festival and there's no doubt that people aren't necessarily endorsing Israel's assault on Gaza by being there. But I say this with a very big caveat ...

Thread -- I've finally had a chance to fully listen and I think that Jesse does himself a disservice in doing this on his own. As far as an editorial goes, he needs someone to help him navigate his thoughts. This isn't an opinion rooted in journalism, it's just an opinion. Now, he has every right to having an opinion. Of course. But someone like him has to decide what kind of opinion serves this moment best now -- one rooted in his reaction to the attacks he's experienced, his complicated feelings towards what's happening, etc ...

Something that is almost always lost in discussion about hate crimes in Canadian society is: who do hate crimes benefit?

Remember: it is politically useful to have a terrorized minority population! When a population is terrorized, they will be less politically bold. There will be forced consensus on the community because they unite against the hatred they experiene. It distracts the community; wastes time. It makes sure that they are focused on the hatred and nothing else.

Let's take apart this article.

1. The lede: "Jewish members of CUPE have filed a human rights claim"

All of them? Oh no, just 25. 2. "alleging discrimination and antisemitism, including recent messages seen as cheering for the deadly Hamas attacks on Israel."

I don't think that a statement that has no bearing on someone's life is actually discrimination. And recent messages seen as cheering on Hamas? Rly?

Anatomy of a free speech crisis -- here, the law school calls the student statement "antisemitic" and being contrary to "inclusivity, dignity, and respect."

In reading this statement, you are left with no other interpretation. Except ...

torontomu.ca/law/news-event… If you actually read the letter, you'll find that there is nothing, nothing whatsoever and at all, antisemitic contained within the letter.

The problem is though, the students took their letter offline. So it's very hard to read what they actually wrote.

🧵In the months leading up to the shooting at the Islamic Cultural Centre in Sainte-Foy, it felt like there was a train barrelling towards a crowd and no one was doing anything to stop it.

There were smaller incidents, rising hatred, hateful rhetoric and facists were *organized* The shooter was not a member of these organized groups. He was radicalized principally online but the organized groups helped to create a culture where he decided to commit mass murder.

And while it was feeling like it could happen at any time ...

Watching a police operation is so fascinating.

Just a bunch of guys, standing around, lookig bored out of their minds. Not looking like anything is urgent. Cracking jokes. Their buds show up, time to maybe go to the apartment. Do I stay awake to catch the arrest? They're all just hanging out in the lobby now. Smiling. Cracking jokes. Doing bud stuff. Leaving their cars on for no obvious reason.
