A common label for Harborne's ventures is "distressed assets" (aka bankrupt, on the verge of bankruptcy or with critical capital structure issues). Ifinex, Hypertunnel, Red Planet, Eclipse, Subsea Resources, it seems like several of his ventures faced those issues at some point.

John Simpson is allegedly a conveyancer from Potters Bar. Acquaintances described him that way, saying he is not a solicitor. He declared himself as such as well, although he is not registered with CLC/SRA. His family home in Potters Bar seems modest for a £100k party donation.
