Yep, time to break from the left. Next time, Dems should try saying they'll do more to crack down on immigration than Republicans. Instead of "Defund the Police," run a prosecutor. Talk about having a gun and wanting a strong military instead of your identity. Just some ideas. More ideas for how Dems should pivot to the middle in the wake of this loss: Offer to put a Republican in your cabinet. Find Republicans willing to be your surrogates and make them major parts of the campaign. Talk up how much you agree with Republicans on the issues at debates.

Democrats in Congress telling reporters straight up that they figure they'll just let Trump win and see what happens — should be plain now to those closer to the center that the left has been more correct about the fundamental character of this party than generally acknowledged. Another neat thing that's happening right now is people arguing that the use of anonymous sources -- always complicated and often worthy of critique, especially here -- means that reporters are simply making things up. "Fake news," they might as well say.

Basically did little to nothing. More evidence social media has been overhyped as a cause of our political dysfunction.
Image Some more on this. There was a trio of papers in Nature and Science last year using data furnished by Meta (which people criticized) that found that 'depolarizing' interventions on social media didn't actually change user attitudes. science.org/content/articl…

Explanatory power is one thing, but people feeling terribly about the economy even as it is doing well by standard metrics is obviously good for the left. My intuition is that malaise about the economy is mostly explained by partisanship and prices, neither of which can be fixed, but talking about improving other parts of the economy (labor conditions, etc) seems like a better political response than telling voters things are fine.

The press really needs to get a grip here. I am genuinely sorry if this offends, but I am really not sure the sociocultural impact of science fiction has been a net positive, all things considered.

Everyone's got their choice bits of vintage Iraq commentary. This one's still mine. Not sure anything tops it. This was May 2003. Clip doesn't quite capture it, but they're talking about Iraq in past tense. The question Friedman is answering: "Now that the war is over and there's some difficulty with the peace, was it worth doing?" charlierose.com/videos/26893
