The notification including three blocks in the Kaveri delta region for coal mining is absolutely shocking and retrograde

No Government in its senses will reserve fertile, paddy-growing land for mining of coal Coal will be the basic fuel of India for many years, but paddy cultivation and livelihoods of farmers are more important than coal

While praising the NDA government's drive on infrastructure, The Economist has added pertinently "How has Mr Modi achieved this lift-off? One answer is that he inherited a solid platform from his two immediately predecessors -- Vajpayee and Manmohan Singh" The magazine has cautioned "the rapid expansion of infrastructure has not spurred the increase in private investment in the economy at large that many had hoped for"

The Economist asked "what is dissuading them?"

A Delhi trial court has held that Sharjeel Imam and 10 others were made "scapegoats" in a case connected with incidents of violence in Jamia Millia Islamia in 2019

Was there even prima facie evidence against the accused? The Court's conclusion: unequivocal no Some accused have been lodged in jail for nearly three years. Some got bail after many months. This is pre-trial incarceration.

An inept police and over-zealous prosecutors are responsible for keeping citizens in jail before trial. What action will be taken against them?

The Government's excuse for scrapping the Maulana Azad National Fellowship and the subsidy for education loans to study abroad to minority students is grossly irrational and arbitrary. Even admitting that there are 'overlapping' schemes, is the fellowship and subsidy to minority students the only schemes that overlap with another scheme?

The mystery of the New Tax Regime (NTR) is unravelling

Read the analysis and the tables in the major newspapers As per THE HINDU, the Old Tax Regime (OTR) is more beneficial upto an income level of Rs 35 lakhs

As per TOI, there is no difference upto an income level of Rs 2 crore

The Economic Survey seems to have been authored by someone who is navigating the journey looking only at the rear view mirror. The navigator (CEA) should have looked at the path ahead through the windshield and cautioned the driver (FM) on the pitfalls and how to negotiate them In paragraphs 1.30 and 1.31, the ES lists all the warning signals but does not list the options available to the Government on averting those dangers

The Hon'ble Chairman of the Rajya Sabha is wrong when he says that Parliament is supreme. It is the Constitution that is supreme.

The "basic structure" doctrine was evolved in order to prevent a majoritarian-driven assault on the foundational principles of the Constitution. Suppose Parliament, by a majority, voted to convert the parliamentary system into a Presidential system. Or repeal the State List in Schedule VII and take away the exclusive legislative powers of the States. Would such amendments be valid?

Once the Hon'ble Supreme Court has declared the law, we are obliged to accept it. However, it is necessary to point out that the majority has not upheld the wisdom of the decision; nor has the majority concluded that the stated objectives were achieved. In fact, the majority has steered clear of the question whether the objectives were achieved at all.

The judgement of the Supreme Court in the case of reservation for Economically Weaker Sections is a watershed moment in the development of the law. The judgement is in two parts:

Part I: All five Honourable judges agreed that a new reservation can be carved out applying economic criteria

Part II: The Court was divided 3:2 on the question of excluding the OBC, SC and ST from the new category of 'poor'

A National Test in the U.S. has revealed that performance of American students in Reading and Arithmetic fell to levels 20 years ago, thanks to the pandemic years In India too, there is empirical evidence that "learning loss" among students, especially in rural India and among the poor, has been alarmingly high

Government is reported to have instructed public sector banks to step up the disbursement of education loans

Banks fell into the habit of rejecting loan requests because of the neglect of the government in the last 8 years Banks are reported to be reluctant because of rising NPAs in education loans

This is a specious argument. Of the loans that are outstanding, only 7.82 per cent (Rs 6246 crore) is NPA

On the day that the PM claimed that "electricity has reached all villages", we read the news that steps are being taken on a 'war footing basis' to take electricity to one of the hamlets in the native village of Presidential candidate Smt Murmu! This is not the only hamlet or village that does not have electricity.

There is no shame in admitting that electricity has yet to reach several remote areas and villages of India

There is no shame in admitting that several thousand households in India do not have electricity

Regrettably, the FM thinks that the average Indian has below-average Intelligence in understanding numbers relating to finances

She has tweeted that her govt spent Rs 90.9 lakh crore on developmental expenditure in 8 yrs compared to Rs 49.2 lakh crore spent by UPA govt in 10 yrs The FM’s arithmetic is correct. Her mathematical conclusion is wrong!

The size of the Budget is bigger
every year. Total expenditure is bigger every year. Developmental expenditure or social services expenditure will also be bigger every year!

Ruchir Sharma has written a learned op-ed in the ToI today that must be made compulsory reading for the ministers in the Modi government and their economic advisers. Instead of indulging in vain boasts the government should put out a reasoned paper on why it expects real GDP growth to be over 8 per cent in 2022-23
