Portland's response to homelessness in winter:

Mayor Wheeler is cutting all funding to a community

He says Hardesty's bureau PBOT can pay the $1,500 monthly (it was news to them)

Ryan told residents the closure was delayed, never mentioned funding cuts

pamplinmedia.com/pt/9-news/4982… This is a dynamic of Portland's "commission" government

Here, elected officials are the boss of separate bureaus (parks, fire, police) and can make orders ... at cross purposes.

In most big cities, the council would simply vote whether to cut funding

Activists are fighting back after Portland announced plans to "decommission" Hazelnut Grove, a houseless village

Organizers expect the closure as soon as 2 weeks from now.

"This is something that is really frustrating and traumatizing residents."

pamplinmedia.com/pt/9-news/4952… It's always striking how little these villages cost the public.

Hazelnut Grove costs the city $1,500K a month

Right 2 Dream Too runs off $30K a year

Of course, part of the reason is unpaid volunteers provide a lot of support

Today in BIG LEGAL NEWS:

The lawsuit: Andy Ngo vs. Rose City Antifa

The news: a judge has rejected protesters' best hope of getting the case tossed out quickly

Instead, the judge sided with Ngo, who wants $900,000 in damages.

Thread below: Protesters had filed a motion calling Ngo's suit a SLAPP — Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation.

This legal principal exists because, in general, people sometimes file lawsuits they know they will lose, in order to punish defendants during the slog of a long trial.
