Shingles vax appears to prevent dementia! Our Nature paper is first of many from my group to show this. We use a really neat natural experiment to provide causal (not just correlational!) evidence. Paper: nature.com/articles/s4158…; video (👏 @DrMayaAdam): bit.ly/4ciRfLh What’s so special about our study? In Wales, if your 80th birthday was just b4 the start date of the shingles vax program, you were ineligible. If it was just after, you could get the shot. Just a week’s difference in age means your chances of getting vaxxed jump from 0 to 50%! Image

Biggest thing to ever come out of my little group. Pls help spread this finding!

We found clean, CAUSAL evidence that the shingles vaccine prevents a good chunk of dementia cases. So, could a virus cause Alzheimer’s->YES!

🧵1/ Image There’s recently been ⬆️ interest in the possibility that a virus may be involved in the causal pathways of dementia. Most attention has been on herpesviruses, incl the VZV that causes chickenpox and shingles, partly because of their lifelong latency (bit.ly/3nibvYk).
