Press Release: PTA has degraded Wikipedia services in the country on account of not blocking / removing sacrilegious contents. Wikipedia was approached for blocking/removal of the said contents by issuing a notice under applicable law & court order(s). An opportunity of hearing was also provided, however, the platform neither complied by removing the blasphemous content nor appeared before the Authority.

Reference queries received on social media regarding reload on pre-paid balance, it is stated that Cellular Mobile Operators are deducting WHT (on recharge) & GST/Federal Excise Duty (on package subscription) after restoration of taxes by Supreme Court of Pakistan from April 2019 On recharge/reload of Rs.100, a balance of Rs.86.96 is being credited to the subscribers after deduction of withholding tax @ 15% instead of Rs.76 (as reported in the social media message).

Press Release: With reference to news item which appeared in a section of media that the regulator is not allowing increase in tariffs of mobile operators, it is clarified that this assertion is incorrect and misleading. PTA only regulates tariff for the dominant mobile operator in Pakistan i.e. PMCL (Jazz) in line with Significant Market Player (SMP) determination and Jazz-Warid Merger condition with the aim to prevent any anti-competitive practices by the market leader.

Press Release: PTA Authorization holder Inovi Telecom has started exporting smart phones to other countries. The first consignment of 5500 units of 4G smart phones carrying “Manufactured in Pakistan” tag has been exported to UAE. PTA congratulates the company for this landmark achievement. This is the result of concerted efforts for the development of mobile device manufacturing ecosystem in the country.

PR: PTA has renewed PTCL integrated license for next 25 years, effective from 1st Jan 2021. License is technology neutral & PTCL shall be able to provide all state-of the-art telecom services under renewed license except mobile services across the country in 14 telecom regions. In order to have enhanced quality of services (QoS) parameters, the renewed license entails conditions including 5% annual increase of Next Generation Access Network (NGAN) connections and QoS service parameters as per international standards.

Press Release: Keeping in view the concerns by general public regarding recently announced changes in privacy policy of WhatsApp, following clarifications have been provided by WhatsApp and Facebook: •The updated Privacy Policy will go into effect on February 8, 2021.
•The rationale for the changes in the WhatsApp privacy policy is to make it easier for people to both make a purchase and get help from a business directly on WhatsApp.

In view of number of complaints from different segments of the society against immoral/indecent content on the video sharing application TikTok, Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued instructions for blocking of the application. Keeping in view the complaints and nature of the content being consistently posted on TikTok, PTA issued a final notice to the application

only Withholding tax & General Sales Tax/Federal Excise Duty on the prepaid recharge/reload after restoration of taxes by the honorable Supreme Court of Pakistan from April 2019.
