I want to open a corresponding thread on women in Central Kenya. It is non-scientific. Based on observation and curiosity. Seeing what many often miss. Women in Central Kenya work extra hard. They are bread winners, have big families. Those that do not go to secondary school or drop off often get to marry and bear kids early.

I had two funerals last week. One was in a place I worked 20 years ago. A parish in Gatundu south.

In 2002, I was a deacon, most of my pastoral duties was conducting burials. I thought it would be a deja vu. Not quite. Then, young men thronged funerals. All tipsy. Most drunk. Many intoxicated. The community detested this. I would talk about it. There was always an embarrassing moment at every funeral.

Governance structure of the Agīkūyū before missionary activity.
They were led by Njama ya mariika na athuri a kīama.

Njama had a lot of power and no one would go against it. Their role was to defend the community.

Any attack from the Maa or Kamba was their call. Njama led for 30-35 years after which they handed over to another Njama in a formal ceremony. *Itwīka*
