Today we’re unmasking ‘Team Jorge’, a hacking and disinformation unit who covertly meddle in elections. They told undercover reporters they’ve interfered in more than 30 presidential campaigns.🧵 theguardian.com/world/2023/feb… One service they sell: a software controlling an army of 30,000 avatars with accounts on Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, Telegram, Gmail, Instagram and YouTube. Some even have Amazon accounts with credit cards, bitcoin wallets and Airbnb accounts.

Thrilled to announce that the Guardian’s investigation team is expanding. We’re recruiting several new journalists, including a deputy investigations editor and a number of correspondents. Full details here, thread to follow. theguardian.com/help/insidegua… Obviously I'm biased, but I think there are few news organisations as well suited to investigative reporting as the Guardian. It is in our DNA. Our unique ownership structure allows us to expose wrongdoing and scrutinise power with complete independence.

Michelle Mone’s lawyers said her “waste of a white man’s skin” remark couldn’t have been racist because it was directed at this man, who she believed had “no trace whatsoever of non-white colouring or any features” that would suggest he was not “100% white”. Put aside whether telling a white person they are a “waste of a white man’s skin” would be any less racist. Richard Lynton-Jones, who is half Indian, believes photos clearly demonstrate his non-white heritage. Mone insists she was actually “calling out” his “white privilege”.

A thread on the Pandora papers and Rishi Sunak, who claims UK tax authorities "will look through those [documents] to see if there is anything we can learn.” Erm, how are they going to do that? HMRC doesn't have access to offshore files – that's the point! Sunak and Boris Johnson reacted to this story about a major Tory donor with the same line: in short, we do all the "checks" and "vetting" required by law. So what exactly is the legal requirement for vetting big donors? theguardian.com/news/2021/oct/…

The offshore secrets of more than 35 current and former presidents revealed in a massive leak. This is one of the most exhausting, complex and potentially explosive investigations I've ever worked on.
