Alright, alright, alright y’all, I’m gonna sign off here for the week. Thank you all for being kind and listen to me ramble about my research, human rights, language and tides. If you enjoyed my stint and wat to follow me, you can find me @GaRoDean. I tweet mostly about minority rights, feminism and Irish. You can also listen to me on the @Motherfocloir podcast where I talk about these things AND about Finland.

Earlier in the week I shared some little graphics looking for people to participate in my research here in Finland. I'm still reall eager to hear from anyone who thinks they might be Abe to help, or who knows someone who might be able to help. Keeping that in mind, a very kind translator friend ran up these two graphics in Swedish and Finnish for me so that they might have a wider reach! Feel free to copy, paste, share! Also, as ever, DM are open on my personal account @GaRoDean

I was recently made aware of comments by a Finnish politician about our referendum. I didn’t hear about it at the time (after the vote, I had to catch up on 3 months of sleep)
A Finnish friend was really upset and wanted me to know that this didn’t represent Finland. I believe many of the Finnish government came out to say something similar, that this wasn’t an official line. To be honest, they need not have done so.

In Ireland, there is a euphemism of “going to England” or “taking the boat”. It refers to women who have abortions. Because up until recently, the only way you could access an abortion was to do it in a different country, usually England. Women would have to seek kindness, compassion and medical care in the arms of strangers because our state refused to acknowledge their existence

If you all would allow me, I’d like to talk a bit about the recent referendum we had back in Ireland. On May 25th we removed the constitutional ban that denied abortion to all women except in the case of certain death. #Repealed I understand that this might be a difficult topic for a lot of people. And that’s ok. But what my country went through was extremely difficult and while it was an extremely tough task, I am so proud of the outcome and of what we managed to do with dignity and respect

Today’s topic continues to be language (again, due to yesterday’s divergence)
I was raised monolingual English-speaking. But in Ireland everyone has to learn Irish throughout school. I never really cared much for Irish until I was about 16/17. I have dyslexia and for many dyslexic people, you are given an exemption from studying Irish. I talk more about my relationship with Irish (and a bit about Finnish!) in an early episode of @Motherfocloir

Moi moi! I’ll be tweeting more about language today. This year I started to learn Irish Sign Language (ISL) and it’s been an amazing experience. Yesterday, for the first time, the Irish national anthem was performed in ISL. Check out the video! ISL is another of Ireland’s indigenous languages. It was recognised in law at the end of 2017 after a 30 year fight by members of the Deaf community.

A question that comes up a lot for me is “why do these people need to use that language? Why can’t they just be like everyone else and speak English/Finnish/Spanish/Italian/etc?” Firstly, I rarely get that question from someone who speaks more than one language and I don’t think I’ve ever gotten it from a minority language speaker. It generally comes from a position of privilege, from a person who has never been othered because of their language

Ok, taking a break for some rye sandwiches and going to tell you all about my research. I’m a PhD candidate in the School or Law and Government at Dublin City University. My research looks at speakers and users or regional or minority languages access their right to a fair trial.

George Stephanopoulous has not listened to my PSA. Let’s all say it together “the facilitators of communication are interpreters, not translators” 👀 @GStephanopoulos What’s the difference, you ask?
Well *gesticulates to an empty room* that’s a great question.
Fundamentally, an interpreter works with spoken word/sign language.
A translator works with written word.

If you’re wondering where you might recognise me from, it’s probably because you read this morning’s @hsfi. Hiiiiiiiiiiiii 👋🏻 Let’s talk about the elephant in the room then, shall we? Or rather the pair of elephants in the city. That’d be Putin and Trump. They visit today for the #HelsinkiSummit2018. Yesterday many people took to the streets in 29 degree heat to protest this summit, myself included.

Oh, it's soon time to log off, so here is my final blurb for the week.

They're some thoughts I find important, and I hope they reach you. Be kind.

Listen and learn. We all have something to say, but we must also listen to relay our message efficiently. Being an asshole or "serving" someone in a discussion doesn't gain you anything.

Hello everyone! We're out of coffee, so need to go out and buy some. ☕

How are you doing today? Slow Sunday afternoon on the tracks.

Time to head back down to the south. The weather is still breezy with overcast, showers left and right. 🚆☔ It's quiet on the train. Train carriages waiting at the train station Some Helsinki scenery from the train arriving at the central railway station. This is still at ten in the evening. ☀️

Electricity at the summer cottage just went out! Thanks to the #juhannus storm. 💨

Luckily we're always prepared with candles and a gas cooker. Water can be pulled from the lake. Plenty of wind, mixed with a bit of thunder. This is the kind of weather that makes trees drop down on the power lines.

As promised, here's a short introduction to #BlackFinnishHistory First, keep in mind that at present there is no book or course on Black Finnish (or Afro-Finnish/African Finnish) history for me to refer to. There's info out there but it hasn't been pieced together into a clear timeline.
