There is one approach that actually works, and it goes against every instinct most of us have in anxious-avoidant dynamics.
It is not more love, more reassurance, or giving them more space. Those strategies tend to backfire because they trigger the avoidantβs core fears.
More pursuit activates their fear of engulfment. Excessive space can feel like abandonment or disinterest, prompting them to shut down even more.
The result is the same frustrating push-pull cycle that leaves both people exhausted.
