9 Fascinating Finds From King Tutankhamun’s Tomb... ( Thread 🧵 )

A dagger crafted from meteorite and the remains of King Tut's stillborn daughters are among the stunning artifacts found in the tomb. Howard Carter examine King Tut's sarcophagus. Photo courtesy the Griffith Institute, colorization by Dynamichrome. 1. An Iron Dagger

On the surface, this iron-bladed dagger doesn’t look like a spectacular find, but King Tut died several centuries before the start of the Iron Age, when advances in technology allowed for the forging of iron and steel from mineral deposits.

During King Tut’s time, the few iron objects on record were made from metals that literally fell from the heavens in the form of meteorites.

“There were theories that the iron dagger was a gift from a foreign king who would have presented it as a ‘gift from the gods,’” says Mueller, “as an omen of something powerful. That really got my attention.”

A solid-gold dagger with an ornately decorated sheath was also found in the folds of King Tut’s mummy placed ceremoniously on his right thigh. Two daggers found in Tutankhamun’s tomb – Right is the meteoric dagger – Image Credit : Bridgeman Images

Incredibly, Iguazu is the largest waterfall system in the world, at 82 meters high and an incredible 2,700 meters wide. This natural phenomenon is a true sight to behold, and UNESCO named it a World Heritage Site in 1984. The surrounding landscape is equally impressive, forming two areas of Natural Park on either side of the river.Image

Who Was the Greatest Roman Emperor?

( Thread🧵👇 ) Many formidable leaders ruled during the long and tumultuous history of ancient Rome, but who was the greatest Roman emperor of them all?

It is a complex question. After all, what makes someone “great”?

Their military accomplishments, building programs, ability to keep the peace, establish the dynasty, or is something else entirely?Roman emperors. Augustus – The First Greatest Roman Emperor.

Unsurprisingly, the title of the “first greatest Roman emperor” goes to Caesar Augustus. While in his youth, Octavian plunged Rome into one of the bloodiest civil wars and toppled the Roman Republic; as emperor Augustus, he created the strong foundation for one of the truly greatest of all empires in human history. Augustus also conquered the last of the Hellenistic kingdoms – Ptolemaic Egypt, which became the emperor’s private possession, and the breadbasket of Rome.

After becoming Roman emperor, Augustus reformed the Roman government, law, and army. By transferring the legions to the frontier, Augustus prevented usurpation and secured lasting peace. He also established the Praetorian Guard. With the help of his trusted friend Agrippa, Augustus commissioned a major building program, transforming Rome into a magnificent imperial capital and the center of the ancient world. But most importantly, Augustus laid the foundation for the first of many imperial dynasties – the Julio – Claudian dynasty.Statue of Augustus, 1st century AD, via Musei Vaticani, Rome.
