My book project is on advisory commissions, some people have asked me my opinion on the SCOTUS commission. A few thoughts:
1. Can’t think of an advisory commission in history of the organizational form stacked with professors that ever amounted to anything.

2. See 1. It sounds great because wow all of these revered “thoughtful” “leading lights”. Until you realize (1) none of them would be responsible for shepherding a single bill through and (2) it’s 2021 and what matters is power. But hey have fun.

You have to wonder why CBO can’t manage to formalize estimates of savings from the life-saving effects of interventions but somehow in an 11-page score of the drug price negotiation bill they purport to do a >10yr forecast of its effects on the number of new drugs introduced Just kind of interesting which things manage to be outside the analytical production boundary.
