Excited to share my new collaboration with Lukas Kunz (@lks_kunz ) in which we show that neurons in the human brain encode 2D positions in space....

an emotion space, that is, defined by valence and arousal!

And, they do it, dare I say, in a grid-like pattern? https://t.co/uS2iGrOkNO
Image Neurosurgical patients at the Freiburg Epilepsy Center performed a memory task using emotional images with normed valence and arousal ratings. We assigned these images a location in a 2D space defined by arousal-valence coordinates (rather than X,Y positions in physical space).

Happy to share my first graduate school paper with @neurojosh, out today in @NatureNeuro (nature.com/articles/s4159…): “Memory retrieval modulates spatial tuning of single neurons in the human entorhinal cortex”. Read on for my best attempt at using twitter effectively (1/7): @neurojosh @NatureNeuro How do our brains represent individual memories for recall? We approached this question through the lens of spatial representations, asking if spatially-tuned neurons highlight locations relevant for memory retrieval (like dropping a pin in Google Maps for a favorite cafe).
