"Repowering Coal Power in China by Nuclear Energy—Implementation Strategy and Potential", a new open access paper, is now available here: mdpi.com/1996-1073/15/3…, quick summary introduction to this work below! [THREAD!]
China is host to half of the worlds thermal coal plant capacity (~1 TWe) and dominates current coal unit new-builds (75% of additions in 2020 with +38.4 GW), 88 GW now under construction and 159 GW more proposed. What happens here is of crucial importance to global emissions.

[1] What determines storage requirements in a 100% RE (mainly PV + wind) system, and how much is really needed? @OliverRuhnau and I tried to figure this out in a new study using 35 years of hourly weather (re-analysis) data for Germany: bit.ly/2XeaGSV THREAD...
[2] A cost-optimal 100%-RE German system (92 GW PV, 94+98 GW on+off. wind + existing other RE & storage - ~130% RE gen. annually) needs an effective storage of 𝟑𝟔 𝐓𝐖𝐡 (~24 days of load!), 98% of which via H₂ (56 TWh H₂-capacity incl. CC discharge eff.). WHY so much? -->

[1/x] Happy to announce the publication of “RETROFIT DECARBONIZATION of COAL POWER” (open access bit.ly/38NihtV, @energies_mdpi). A riveting 39-page article (+ 44p S.I.), obviously makes for excellent holiday/wknd reading :) Here's an attempt at a tweet-summary-thread!
[2/x] Out of ~2 TWe of coal power plant capacity, more than half is less than 14 years old. Can this infrastructure play a role in decarbonized power systems or must it all be stranded? We try to look at ALL options in this work, supported by @EnvDefenseEuro & Rodel Foundation.

Some EU nuclear power plants have been curtailed two summers in a row due to heat waves. While this gets LOTS of press, I haven't seen analysis on the actual impacts, and if the situation can be fixed. So, short report for @Energy4Humanity: bit.ly/323ZPIv [THREAD]
The total impact of heat-wave curtailment since 2000 have meant loosing on the order of ~0.1% of European nuclear output (in France ~0.15%). Figures are approximate, particularly outside of France, but gives a sense scale of the problem on an annual output basis.
