I always wondered how often this happened. Quite often it seems. It also happened to me.

I was at a team meeting in Toronto and we were staying at the Four Seasons. We were all due to go out for dinner and arranged to meet at the bar.

I arrived early to find one other person there, drinking alone so I went and joined them.

I offered them a beer, which they accepted and we chatted why we were visiting Toronto. "I'm here to watch a friend's show", he said. I was a salesman so not much in common so we talked about cars for about 30 minutes
