🧵 1/6: Who is Raj Shah? #USAID #USAIDFiles

Raj Shah is the President of the Rockefeller Foundation and served as the Administrator of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) from 2010 to 2015. Prior to that, he held various roles, including at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, where he focused on global health and vaccine development initiatives.

As Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton supported President Obama’s 2009 nomination of Raj Shah to lead USAID, aligning with his focus on global health, poverty reduction, and Haiti’s recovery. Her endorsement was pivotal to his appointment.

Shah was instrumental in shaping USAID's strategy on global health, among other areas, which included overseeing the agency's involvement with programs like PREDICT. ⬇️

2/6: The PREDICT Program & Eco Health Alliance:

The Predict program began prior to Raj Shah’s tenure at USAID, but it was during his leadership from 2010 to 2015 that the program expanded significantly and became more prominent under USAID’s Emerging Pandemic Threats Program.

From 2010 to 2015, Predict received substantial funding, reportedly over $200 million, and was a key part of the U.S. government’s strategy to prevent future pandemics. The program worked to track zoonotic diseases (those that jump from animals to humans), collaborating heavily with EcoHealth Alliance and other global partners. EcoHealth played a major role in conducting research and establishing surveillance networks in high-risk areas like Southeast Asia and Africa.

Despite its ambitious aims, the Predict program faced significant criticism for its limited effectiveness. Though it gathered valuable data on animal-borne diseases, it did not prevent major outbreaks like Ebola or Zika.Image
