The precursor to the Ghadar Movement--
Certain events directly affected the evolution of the discontent among the diaspora into a full fledged armed Movement.
It is important to highlight them before stepping into the Ghadar Movement to give a comprehensive view. A famous couplet among the diaspora captures the mood of the times ---
Zalam Coolie Pukaran Sanoon,
Karde ne badkhoi ji,
Izzat,aadar,mool na sada
Zalam lah lai loi ji.

Every day was spent in enduring humiliation and the police & administration were apathetic at their best.

Sunday calls for commemoration of the legends. In that spirit I wish to recall the story of Bota Singh and Garja Singh.Zakariya Khan was the Subedar of Punjab and the Viceroy of Lahore from 1726. He was re-appointed the Governor by Persian Emperor Nadir Shah in 1738. He was forced to pay an annual tribute to Nadir Shah under that arrangement. He continued his predecessor's policy of persecution and disallowed Sikhs from entering Amritsar for pilgrimage. It was somewhere in 1738 that two brave men decided to flout the imperial directive.

There was wholesale slaughter that followed as Abdali's army was notorious for plunder.

Non Cooperation as an instrument of mass struggle was championed by a group of devout Sikhs much before its formal introduction by Mr. Gandhi on 4th September 1920.
Many elements of Satyagraha like self-sufficiency,passive protest and non-violence are rooted in the Kuka Movement. Now let us travel back to 1799. Baba Balak Singh was born in Attock district. He started early as a preacher and advocate of religious purity in Sikhism. Some tharditions maintain that Baba Balak Singh was a disciple of Bhagat Jawar Mal popularly known as Sian Sahib.

The first resolute mark of mass agitation against the British rule in Punjab took place during the Agrarian Unrest of 1907.The first genuine sign of collective unrest against the Colonisation Bill of 1906, which was both devious and exploitative in character. The bill was a tact employed by the Government to usurb private land. It clearly stated that any agrarian land without a heir whose owner; in the event of the owner's demise will stand expropriated by the British Government.
This act was rooted in another Act dating back to 1900.

The year 1921 is very significant in the history of the Akali Movement. Following the Nankana bloodbath of Feb 1921, there was resentment about the methodology adopted by moderate Akalis, who resorted to resolute resistance through non-violent means. The wing that endorsed a more aggressive approach departing from the Gandian doctrine of passive suffering at the hands of oppressors. They advocated a militant approach rooted in armed resistance. This splinter group parted ways with the dominant Akali leadership.

The date that occupies a very special meaning the index of Akali movement is October 13th,1920. Sikh students of the Khalsa College (Amritsar) encouraged a group of often labeled mazhabi Sikhs to go along with them to offer
Karan Prasad.
Discrimination was rigorous under Mahants. Image A particular time of the day was fixed for accepting offering of Karan Prasad for Mazhabi Sikhs. On any other hour Karan Prasad offering and prayers were refused from them by the Mahants. Such was the extreme practice of casteist Brahminical practices in those times. Image
