Hey @natwexler your opening statement tells me you don't get it AT ALL. How dare you twist my words to make your case, holding me up like some "Black friend" prop. You never bothered to reach out for an actual interview. Then tagged me in a tweet like I agree w/ this article. This isn't about reading wars. Units of Study, balanced literacy, science of reading. It is abt children building their learning muscles. Hell, slaves taught themselves to read with sticks and dirt! But, this article has 3 claims that make it problematic to me.

Oh, this should be interesting...Some tips. 1) Keep student learning at the center. Ground it in the roots of white supremacy that under-developed the cognition of Black & Brown children as the way to generate inequitable outcomes. First meeting, include pp.12-124 from Chap.8 Interrupt the misconception that CRT is designed to "fix" Black and Brown kids. They ain't broken. Or, that CRT is about relationships. Book Study tip #2 - Clarify what I mean by "independent learners" -- I am talking about cognition rather than compliance.

During distance learning, we don’t get a pass on cultural competence. Here's what NOT to do. A school administrator at Red Hawk Ridge Elementary that serves a large # of families of color @CCSDK12 thought it would be funny to come to a virtual family hr in a MAGA hat. WTH?! This is a big fail for @CCSDK12 leadership that purports to be equity-focused but offers no public comment or reprimand. This is the time when engaging parents in culturally responsive ways is critical to maintain trust & open communication. Thanks @yesmsbenson for the heads up
