Personal account of mine. Father from Bay Mills Indian Community (Ojibwe) on Lake Superior. Also a miserable & insufferable Detroit Lions fan.

I'm loathe to do this, but a local school in my area held an emergency school board mtg to allow kids who should be in quarantine (per local health dept) to play in playoff football game.

@MHSAA needs to do something. This is reckless.

(There's more) 3 weeks ago, Pickford Public Schools closed because of COVID cases in the school. The school administrators made the correct decision to close in-person learning and cancel their football game.

Pickford is the defending State Champion. That game was a Top 10 matchup.

Since the start of the pandemic, our community and region in the EUP avoided the worst effects. That was through a combination of luck and work.

That has changed. 75% of total confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Chippewa County have come in the last month. The hospital is filling up The explosion in cases here can be tied back to Halloween weekend, when there were a number of parties at bars and also at private homes.

There were several high school parties involving kids from different communities and schools that seeded new clusters of cases.

This occurred not far from Bay Mills Indian Community. Lots of people are familiar with the story of the Edmund Fitzgerald. Rightfully so. It was tragic.

But, that same night, there was another story unfolding on @LakeSuperior just a few miles away involving tribal fishers. That night, there were hurricane force winds on eastern Lake Superior. Tough for any vessel to handle - even 750 ft long freighters.

There were Bay Mills Indian Community fishers on the Lake that night trying to pull their nets. In boats like these. (This is my friend Jacques)

I have some disjointed thoughts on the SCOTUS decision in McGirt this week (Creek Reservation Boundary Case):

1. The opinion was very good, and I give Gorsuch credit for speaking with moral clarity. BUT...Sotomayor has been in the same place on Indian law since she got on Court 2. SCOTUS took 2 full terms to resolve McGirt. The law was actually quite clear, which is the reason it took so long. 4 judges (including Roberts) knew it, but could not reconcile with their own views about what the outcome "should" be...

Just had to announce to 400 tribal employees and their families that we are placing them on "unpaid leave," starting Easter Sunday. This is rough, man.

I'm going to share some thoughts on this process. I'm pretty raw, but here goes.

Despite what many assume, casino tribes aren't all rich. Most are just "getting by." And our executives dont run for-profit enterprises. These casinos fund our governments.

Michigan Auto Insurance Reform Thoughts:

I dont know how this bill addresses catastrophic claims. But, here's a story about how it works in real life:

I have a family member who was run off the road and left paralyzed from the chest down. /1 He had a successful career working for a large company, but was forced into retirement. He had built his life the way we tell people to: went to college, worked, got married, had 3 kids, saved for college, saved for retirement, and lived within his means.
