So I’ve been coming out slowly for the past 4 years. This is a thread on why trans kids to their parents is such a dangerous idea as someone who first told teachers at 15. Trans kids are often isolated, often we don’t know any other trans kids and even when we do know some, we may not feel comfortable talking to them.

There’s a lot of anger around @Mermaids_Gender right now from Gender Critical people, who’ve never used it.

I have. So let me tell you what they’re actually like. Between the age of 15 and 17, I was hiding my gender identity even when I didn’t really want to. Why did I hide it? I didn’t have the confidence to come out. I didn’t know anyone like me. I didn’t know who I could talk to. I was scared, and alone.

But I spoke to mermaids. I was nervous about making the phone call with them. I didn’t want anyone to find out.

Sometimes I see Gender Critical people say to me that, whilst I am happy as a trans person right now, I’ll probably detransition in the future. This kind of narrative is surprisingly common. Even when I’ve stated nothing that would suggest I’m even unhappy with my transition… …let alone considering detransition.

It’s almost like they want me to detransition, even when I’ve said I’m happy that I transitioned.

It’s a harmful narrative, whilst no one should be pressured into transitioning, equally no one should be pressured into detransitioning.

Free Speech, Liberalism and intolerance.

A Thread: It is true, that liberalism believes in free speech by virtue of wanting the state to stay out of our lives. This has been a thing for a long time but is especially strong in more classical liberalism. The modern liberal alternative doesn’t see the state in the same way.

Why I see this as dangerous for British Democracy.

Thread: 🧵 1/x As we all know parties are political entities of people of similar political ideas. Some viewpoints are fundamental to a party, for example the Scottish national party supporting independence or the Green Party supportive the environment.
