Irving Kristol, a New Yorker of Jewish descent, is considered to be the "Godfather" of Neoconservatism.

Irving studied journalism at New York City College and graduated in 1940. In college, he joined the Young People's Socialist League, a group of Trotsky-aligned, anti-Stalinist liberals who later became known as the "New York Intellectuals."

The New York Intellectuals were a small group of primarily Jewish-American writers and literary critics based in New York City in the mid-20th century. They advocated for left-wing politics but were critical of Communism under the Stalin regime.
