Each year, Congress passes the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). And each year, we vote against it. Here’s why: 🧵 The $857 billion budget that passed Congress this week is $45 billion higher than what the President requested. To put this number into perspective, it would cost $90 billion a year to cut child poverty in half, and $20 billion to end homelessness in the United States.

In @OversightDems today, we spoke about the correlation between fossil fuel sites & violence against indigenous women. @ACLUNorthDakota found that 411 missing or murdered indigenous people were in areas with pipeline projects. Why....? Extraction sites create temporary settlements or 'man camps,' strategically placed right outside indigenous communities. Many tribes don't have jurisdiction over non-native offenders. So when workers commit violence against indigenous women, they escape jurisdiction.

3 insane but true facts about the filibuster:

1. The Founders didn't create the filibuster, and many directly opposed it. The Senate was designed and initially operated with simple-majority rule. The filibuster was essentially a mistake.
constitutioncenter.org/blog/is-aaron-… 2. Between 1969 and 2014, the filibuster was reformed 161 times.

So the idea of creating an exception in the filibuster for voting rights or civil rights legislation — as many are now asking for — isn't new or radical.

Today, the House passed the Protecting Democracy Act, which included four of our amendments.

Our first amendment expands the definition of nepotism to include the office of the president. Currently, the definition only applies to federal agencies.🧵 Our second amendment codifies the ‘Biden Ethics Pledge,’ which was unprecedented in its strength. The amendment ensures no future president can revoke it.

On Friday, the House passed Build Back Better. So, what’s in it? Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez successfully fought for the creation of the Civilian Climate Corps as well as funding for public housing and high speed rail. Here’s what this means: 🧵 In April, we introduced the Civilian Climate Corps with @SenMarkey. Build Back Better allocates $30 billion in funding for the creation of a new Civilian Climate Corps, which would create 300,000 green, good-paying, union jobs.

Last week, we heard a lot about the International Criminal Court, or the ICC.

But what exactly is the ICC, and what does it have to do with the United States, Afghanistan, and Israel? 🧵 The ICC investigates and tries those who have committed crimes against humanity. This includes cases of war crimes, torture, apartheid, ethnic cleansing and genocide.

We support a process of self-determination for Puerto Rico. Why?

1. Statehood isn't the only option. There's also independence or free association.

2. It's not clear which of these options a majority of Puerto Ricans support.

(1/7) A 2017 statehood ballot referendum had 23% voter turnout (it's usually 80%) after a boycott by all opposition political parties.

The 2020 referendum got 52% support, but asked a single yes-or-no question: Should P.R. become a state? Which is not representative of other options.

In preparation for Monday's hearing, where @RepAOC will question Postmaster DeJoy, we asked NY-14 constituents how the Trump administration's sabotage of the Postal Service has impacted their lives. Here's what they shared.....(1/6) 'In late June, we sent time-sensitive notarized legal documents by priority mail. They never arrived and they appear to still be sitting in a distribution center. We had to travel to another state to re-sign and re-notarize the documents in person at the lawyer's office.' (2/6)
