Nothing is going to happen. The RW accounts posting about “sleeping giants” fundamentally do not get *how* this state of affairs became routine…and thus can’t remedy it

It is unironically good for the US to adopt a jocular bellicosity. I will beat this drum 100x:

The US has been THE global empire for 80yrs. The equivalent of Rome in 50 BC (80yrs after the conquest of Greece…very analogous to Old World Western Europe)

But it’s INVISIBLE I’ve spent a lot of tweets describing the elegance of this invisible empire that centers the USD while the US Navy acts as a menacing Lucco Brazza; looking in as you sign the papers

But this system no longer works b/c the world, and we as Americans have changed

I’m not a scholar but “dining out” in America didn’t exist as we understand it until ~1965

Before that you had a spectrum
-Roadside Hamburger shacks
-Woolworths Counters
-TINY mom & pop ethnic eateries
-“Supper Clubs”
-Fine dining in hotel restaurants

Benihana changed the game Benihanna brought upscale but accessible exotic dining to upper class. Ppl wore ties & sipped mai-tais. It was VERY mid 60s

But Benihanna and its imitators were urban. The REAL transformation came in late 60s/early 70s

It’s actually important to understand Bannon’s vision…and why he is not part of Trump 2.0 (and basically failed at Trump 1.0)

Bannon *correctly* ID’d (in 2015 no less!) the contours of the *2024* Trump coalition

But the ‘16 coalition was still too Romney-esque for his views Bannon strongly believed in leveraging the existing power of the federal government for his ideal coalition (which again didn’t really happen till 2024)

This is at odds w/ both old school Cons who want less gov’t & antiwoke new Rs who get that the Fed Gov’t will always tilt left

I was wrong bout Trump’s Midwest weakness and the reason is SUPER important

NY/NJ/VA shifting 12/10/5 points rightwards is huge. I said “this will happen but it won’t carry over to the Midwest”…it did BUT it really was bifurcated/not uniform

The reason was NOT ground game 🧵 Obvi Trump got his 2020 base at perfect high levels (better than I expected) but in places where minority men live he really did find new voters

The Midwest didn’t uniformly swing like NY b/c Harris voters there just didn’t have a reason to be as done w/ Ds as blue state Ds

Pop vote: Trump 47.4%, Harris 50.7%

EC: Harris 281, Trump 257

Senate: 52 R, 48 D

I have low-medium confidence in map but higher in top line Harris W. Let me explain Image This election is odd b/c both parties got their “dream” opponent

Rs were thrilled to face Harris believing Biden’s gains with whites could not be recreated by Harris

Trump WAS disciplined (for him) and stayed on message (immigration)

But Trump had ~6 hanging curves over the middle he barely connected on

He actually did this a lot in 16&20 but ppl forget 🧵 Trump’s extensive reliance on 3 adjectives (“the worst ever” “disaster” “most embarrassing”) felt a lot like a crutch

He nailed Biden ONCE on his Medicare line but was much more unfocused given the lack of coherence on Biden’s answers

Okay I’m answering this once and for all. Things were “better” in 1985 b/c

1. Ppl had less after $
2. There were less things to spend $ on
3. WAY less access to credit/capital
4. FAR less material & social stratification between classes
5. America was less competitive 1. Ppl had less after tax $

A married couple in 1985 w/ an HHI of $50k ($185k today) paid 36% fed taxes. At 100k ($290k today) you paid 50%!

Tax advantages were really mature back then (401k, HSA) so ppl ACTUALLY paid that
