I've written this piece for @Telegraph on why it matters that some male crimes are being recorded in the official statistics as female crimes

Below a summary thread

telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/03/0… Some argue that criminal statistics should reflect how suspects see themselves: an exercise in recognition and respect

The problem here is that criminal statistics are compiled to inform, and to assist in the development of effective policies, not to affirm feelings

The BBC referred to “the fact that Blake is a transgender woman… across our output”, apart from “the report on News at One on 26 February”, according to this @BBCNews response to complaints

Reader. It didn’t

A thread

bbc.co.uk/contact/compla… 14 August 2023: “A woman has appeared in court charged with murdering a man who was found dead in a river two years ago”

No reference to Blake identifying as transgender

Does it matter that the awful murder of Jorge Martin Carreno by a male offender - Scarlet Blake - is set to be recorded as a female crime?

A short thread

telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/02/2… Over the ten-year period between the year ending June 2014 and the year ending June 2023, a total of 3,228 defendants were convicted of murder in England and Wales

Here's the breakdown by year: a low of 268 convictions in 2015, a high of 376 last year Image

Just sent the following feedback to the BBC on this story

bbc.co.uk/news/uk-englan… Your report uses female pronouns and female descriptors to refer to Scarlet Blake, despite the fact that he is male and committed an act of male violence against another male.

Question from Labour's Mary Glindon just now in parliament on whether the government will resentence prisoners under the dreadful #IPP sentence.

Short answer: we'll tell you in due course. This statement by the Justice Secretary, Dominic Raab, to @CommonsJustice this afternoon, does not sound encouraging re the government's intentions on the proposed resentencing exercise for those under the #IPP sentence

I have heard that at least two female child prisoners are currently being held at the male young offender institution at Wetherby.

It follows the removal of child prisoners from Rainsbrook secure training centre because of safety and welfare concerns.

This is unacceptable. Inspectorate report out on Wetherby children's prison this morning.

Wetherby is a male children's prison which started housing female child prisoners (three at the time of the inspection) after the closure of other provision.

A short thread on today's judgment on the Downview prison transgender unit.

Short version. Guess what, the High Court agrees that rights are a pie. I always thought that this would be a difficult case to win. I'm disappointed that the Court decided against issuing a more robust defence of the rights of female prisoners in relation to male prisoners who identify as women. There is, though, a lot to welcome in this judgment.

Important report by MPs on policing of the Sarah Everard vigil and the Bristol protests.

The government's plans to increase police powers against protestors should be opposed.

independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-n… Link to the full report.

Highly critical of police tactics. Very different to the Inspectorate report from March, which concluded the police "acted appropriately".

Some interesting recommendations. Though not this one. This is a very idea bad idea.
