Just went through a metal detector to enter the area surrounding the Capitol.

The checkpoint was manned by Secret Service, not NG Trump Hotel appears to be open for business (you just have to go through a metal detector and have any large bags sniffed by dogs first)!

From what I can see, major arteries into the city are open 🚦

BUT access to the Capitol/White House/Freedom Plaza areas are mostly restricted for unauthorized car traffic within 4-5 blocks ⚠️ For access to White House/Freedom Plaza area, K street is still open for now, although anything south of there is blocked from car traffic 🚧

As @USBPChiefYUM explains, this section of fence was erected in the 90’s. It’s made of “landing matte,” a Vietnam era surplus originally manufactured as landing pads for helicopters in the wetlands of Vietnam: Here @USBPChiefYUM describes some of the vulnerabilities of this design.

The angled top doesn’t allow anyone to shimmy down the north side, but it also makes for an easy place to hang out until border patrol leaves the area.

He also notes that it will be replaced this year:
