It's been a really long week and I'm very tired but I really think we need to talk about the difference between hate crimes as a legal term and the way we describe how a community experiences violence. What ~legally~ qualifies as a hate crime depends on a variety of factors involving the law and law enforcement. And just because a crime legally qualifies as a hate crime doesn't mean it will be successfully investigated or prosecuted as one.

There's been so much news about treatment of migrants and refugees at the U.S.-Mexico border this week that it's been hard to keep track. Some highlights: The @HoustonChron reported that Border Patrol in Texas has been separating parents from their children when they cross the border, and one man was deported without his toddler.
