This quote @SecPompeo uses to promote his Commission on Unalienable Rights couldn’t get the point of Frederick Douglass’s famous "What to the Slave Is the Fourth of July?” speech more wrong. This is selective--one might even say cynical--quoting in the extreme. 1/ The heart of Douglass' speech was his indictment of 18th and 19th century American society for the gaping hypocrisy between our founding documents and the horror of human slavery.

Yet Pompeo just ignores all that complexity for a little bit of rah rah. 2/

THREAD: As we await President Trump's remarks tomorrow at the UN on American sovereignty and values, a reminder that 6 years ago to the day, a different U.S. president gave a speech during UN week focused entirely on human trafficking.
