1) Think Emily's speech was good and the message abut calling things out is important. Tempted, though, to feel that the laudable experiment that is BBC impartiality is on the rocks. bbc.co.uk/news/entertain… 2) We may well end up with more liberal versus conservative broadcast media here in the UK, as in the US, which will benefit the side of that divide with the deepest pockets. Think @LBC have an interesting model about how to avoid that but others less scrupulous.

THREAD

1)Because of the changes in BBC News announced today, my job as Editor of Live Political Programmes has closed. I’m hugely proud of the teams and the programmes they delivered. Programmes, not just news, really matter. 2) I devised #politicslive in 2018. I’m proud of the show’s depth, accessibility and commitment to diversity of opinion. It has put on over 30% in viewing figures compared with the also excellent Daily Politics which it replaced and was doing so pre-Covid general ratings bounce.

1) I’ve been largely off Twitter over Christmas. But I see the BBC’s critics from left and right are still here. It is of course legitimate to criticise and debate the BBC and it’s a fact of life. But . . . 2) While impartiality is difficult and we will make mistakes trying, it is a really important and laudable goal. Most media takes a position and looks at issues through that prism. We try and offer something different and valuable: fair coverage without fear or favour. .

1) This thread has been picked up on here. Just for clarity, @afneil referred to the case of a Labour member Lesley Perrin whose case was assessed by the Labour Party after she has shared a video denying the Holocaust and cast doubt on the number murdered. 2) Lesley Perrin did leave the Labour Party shortly after these comments came to light, but the Labour Party wrote to her giving her a warning for her conduct. We've seen this letter. They didn't expel or suspend her but issued a "Reminder of Conduct" - see next tweet for quote.

1) There is, understandably, a strong reaction to us interviewing Ben Shapiro on today's #politicslive. We do so because he has millions of followers on social media and is hugely influential, particularly among young people worldwide. We could ignore that or. . . 2) . .we can do our job and challenge with tough questions put by @afneil. Shapiro is actually "platformed" when he speaks, unchallenged, to 5.2million on Facebook, 2.1m on Twitter and 1.5m on Instagram. If you are worried about this you should watch this very tough interview.
