I understand that this is many ppl's truth, but hearing "my [grand]parents spoke Yiddish so we wouldn't understand" over and makes me nuts. the idea of mesore, the transmission of Jewishness, is such a key Jewish value. In yiddish we talk about di goldene keyt, the golden chain- Of transmission of Yiddishkayt through the generations. It's just so heartbreaking and maddening that of all the many threads of Jewishness, so many ppl chose Yiddish to hide away, to purposefully snap those threads of continuity.
